Best Advice For Reducing Gas Bills
Reducing gas bills is a priority for many people, particularly during winter months. Gas can be a big expense. So, here are some great tips on how to keep your home nice and warm. You’ll save lots of money by following our guide.
Insulate your home
A third of what it costs to heat your home will end up escaping through your walls. The only way to avoid this is by ensuring that your home is adequately insulated. Proper heating equipment will also keep all that heat in, and the ice-cold air out.
Draught excluders can save you somewhere in the region of £35 a year. So, make sure you seal up all draughty gaps, but don’t stop there! Insulate your roof, floors, windows, boiler, and pipes and tanks. Cavity wall insulation will probably save you over £150 a year. Insulating your loft may save you up to £140.
If your home has high ceilings, a neat trick you could try is placing a shelf right above the radiator. This reflects the heat back down into the room, rather than letting it escape up into the ceiling.
Lastly, if you can afford it, fit some double glazing. Don’t allow all that heat to escape through your windows!
Turn down that thermostat
Did you know that if you reduce the temperature in your home by just 1°C, you could dramatically cut your heating bill? Yep, you could slash it by up to 10%. This will probably save you more than £75 on your annual bill.
Why not try wearing warmer clothes indoors this winter too? Turning your thermostat down a few degrees probably won’t seem so bad if you do this. 😊 To make even more savings, turn your thermostat down during the night as well, and when you’re not at home of course!
Stop putting stuff on your radiators
This is a bad habit that many people have. 😊 Hanging your washing on the radiator? Yes…it may be convenient, but it’s not a great idea. Another thing you should avoid is sticking your sofa in front of your radiator. Why? Well, it will absorb all the heat, which will leave you wondering why your room feels so cold!
You could also try putting insulation panels or sheets behind the back of your radiator. This will reflect the heat back into your room. An alternative fix is to use radiator foil or ordinary kitchen foil. Just make sure the shiny side is facing towards the back of your radiator.
Get a new and improved boiler
Your boiler accounts for more than 55% of your energy bills. By investing in a more energy efficient boiler you’ll be able to significantly reduce your gas consumption.
Make sure you purchase an A-rated high-efficiency boiler. This will prove to be very economical. You might even be able to achieve savings up to £350 per year!
The ideal type of curtains for winter are thermal ones or just heavy ones. Be sure to close them at night, or when it’s very cold. This will help you to retain heat.
Thermal curtains are the perfect solution for insulating your windows. Over the course of time, an investment in a nice set of thick curtains will save you loads on your heating bill.
Warm up your walls
If you have large walls with cold spots on them, this may mean that your walls don’t have any insulation or not enough. An easy and inexpensive way to address this is to hang a quilt or rug on your wall. It’s also a lovely way to decorate your room. 😊
Maintain your heating system
If your boiler is old and your heating system is poorly maintained, it won’t be as efficient as it needs to be. This is like throwing good money down the drain. Before the winter kicks in, you must ensure that your boiler and heating system is up to scratch. Don’t wait until your boiler breaks down. This will turn out to be a costly mistake.

Pre-heat your bed
Don’t waste your gas by turning up your thermostat to heat your chilly bed. This obviously won’t help when it comes to reducing gas bills. What you should do is pre-heat your bed with an electric blanket. Do this just as you’re getting ready for bed. By the time you’re ready to dive in, it’ll be nice and toasty for you. Remember to turn off the electric blanket before you drift off to sleep though! Flannel sheets are nice and cosy in the winter. This will keep you warm during the night, so, you won’t need to blast your thermostat any more.
