Explore Life Before Modern Plumbing Maintenance
I bet you didn’t know that modern plumbing maintenance changed the world! That’s not surprising. Plumbing is a vital profession; however, it often gets overlooked. At MJC Plumbing we’re passionate about what we do and by the time you’ve finished reading this post, you’ll understand why.
We need to give the good old plumber much more credit. Why? The truth is, if it wasn’t for the contribution that plumbers make, we probably wouldn’t have diseases under control throughout the world. Modern plumbing maintenance has saved untold lives.
Sewage systems, modern water infrastructure and access to clean water have ensured that we can eradicate diseases. Where these elements are not in place, we find that disease is rampant.
Life Before Public Sewers and Plumbing
Life before modern plumbing was obviously very different to how it is now. People’s indoor facilities were very basic. They included things like a pitcher, washbowl, a chamber pot or commode, and sometimes a washstand. Human waste was also disposed of by simply throwing it into the street or some other convenient place.
Diseases spread easily because areas were overrun with rats and vermin, due to the lack of sanitation. The Black Plague probably killed up to 200 million people, which was equivalent to around a third of Europe’s entire population. This outbreak forced Medieval people to investigate the link between health and hygiene. Sanitation was an important medical advance, and this led to our modern public sewers and plumbing.
London, Poor Plumbing, and Cholera
In the early to mid-1800’s, London didn’t have proper plumbing and many people were forced to get their drinking water from communal wells and town pumps. Arrangements for waste disposal was also inadequate. People would dump their sewage and animal wastes in ‘cesspools’ (open pits), or just straight into the Thames River. Believe it or not, this was also a source of drinking water.
Not surprisingly, in 1854 there was an outbreak of cholera in London. This resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people. The disease could spread easily and rapidly through the contaminated water. It was often fatal within just a few hours. Early symptoms included vomiting and diarrhoea.
At the time of the outbreak, there was a doctor who lived in Soho, called Dr. John Snow. Five years prior to this he had written an article on what he believed to be the cause of cholera. He had claimed that it was in the water. However, others disagreed with him. He investigated the cause of the outbreak of cholera in London. He subsequently managed to convince people that the outbreak was due to the fact that water supply was contaminated with ‘fecal matter’
The Breeding Grounds For Polio
Unfortunately, in our modern world, some diseases are still able to thrive if adequate plumbing infrastructure and water sanitation are not in place. For example, smallpox continued to be a problem in Europe until plumbing infrastructure was put in place. Polio is another disease which can be easily transmitted in human waste. In parts of the world where sanitation and hygiene are poor, Polio can spread rapidly. Vaccines on their own cannot stop polio, so modern plumbing maintenance and sanitation is paramount.
Plumbing Is The Cure
Modern plumbing maintenance and sanitation clearly prevent the spread of many diseases. It’s all thanks to plumbers! ?
You see, it’s not just medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies that provide cures!
Most developed countries ensure that their people have access to modern plumbing. We’ve sure come a long way since those early days, haven’t we?
So, the next time you sit back and relax with a glass of water straight from your tap, or enjoy a nice hot shower, think about those who have helped make that possible.
The work that plumbers do daily saves lives and stop the spread of disease. We should really give thanks for the outstanding contribution of modern plumbing to the improvement of all our lives.
